Gearing Up for Back-to-School Photos

With school just around the corner, we wanted to help prepare you with some tips for your best back to school photos!

Tip #1:  Some of the best photos are those that involve no pose, but rather capture every day life and the first few days of school.  Walking down the street to the bus stop, or engaging with siblings and friends are just a few ways to do so.

Tip #2:  Snap a picture of your child and their new teacher. Continue reading

The Do’s and Don’ts of Photographing Family Reunions

It’s that time of year where family get together for reunions!  What better time to book photographs than when grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are visiting?!  If you want to produce some great photos, keep these tips in mind when discussing photos with your family and your photographer:

  • Scope out a location ahead of time.  Try to go for a “distraction-free” setting.  For example, a field with no buildings or houses in the background is great.  There will be a lot of faces to photograph, so the simpler the background, the better.
  • Plan a time with your family when the photo will be taken.  We recommend sometime in the evening and in the shade, so that people are not squinting in the photo.
  • Have everyone wear solid colours.  This will help the attention be drawn to faces,  not the clothing.  Tell your group to try and stay away from big logos and bold stripes, if at all possible.
  • Group people according to families/couples.  Make sure everyone is standing near his or her family.  If the event is centered around one or two people, put them in the center of the group (for example, grandma and grandpa’s anniversary!)
  • Do some close up shots.  Talk with your photographer about doing close up shots of each family.  This is another great way to get some family photos for Christmas cards!
  • At a loss of how to make your photos memorable?  Try doing some shots lying down, making silly faces, everyone jumping at once, or themed.

As always, the best photos you get will be the ones taken from a professional photographer.  Talk to us today to book your family reunion photos!

Summer Play and Fun Candid Shots

Miko Photography summer family photo sessionIt’s that time of year! Summer has FINALLY arrived! Kids are out of school, and it’s time to let the fun times begin! What activities do you have planned for the summer? Let us know in the comments below. If you are in the Calgary area and are looking for some fun summer ideas, check out this list of 100 Things to do in Calgary This Summer.

Some of our favourite sessions are family photos at the beach, or creek sessions where we can get some fun candid shots, in addition to a nice portrait. The kids grow up so fast, and it is always neat to look back on summer outdoor photos where everyone is naturally already having a good time enjoying the warm weather and new adventures. Are you Capturing Life’s Memorable Transitions? The Importance of Grad Photos

So many things happen in the spring and summer, especially for those who have a graduate in their family.  Maybe it’s a high school graduate, a College/University grad, a Grade 9 grad, a Kindergarten grad, or maybe your child is graduating from one level to the next in an extra-curricular activity.  Whatever the case may be, graduation is an exciting transition.  It is about taking the next step into something new after accomplishing a significant milestone.

Sometimes it is too easy to get caught up in the busyness of life, and we forget to capture the memorable moments such as graduation.  You are proud of your kids for reaching new goals, and those memories should not be forgotten.  That is why we recommend graduation photos, and to make things even easier, below is a list we have compiled to help make these photos that much more efficient to organize.
